Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Severe Pain And Swelling In The Fingers?
I was working in my garden and felt a sharp pain in my finger. I thought it was a bee sting and Immediately took an antihistamine as I have reacted before. I got the hoe and tried to see what it was but found nothing under the pile of leaves I had been removing. Two days later it is more swollen, red and hard. I was going to wait it out but someone said it could have been a bat bite. That terrifies me as we knew someone who died of rabies. There are no marks that I can see but I know sometimes there are not. Any advice?
As you are not sure that it's a bat bite or bee sting.
I really need to see your hand because there can be two possibilities, it can be either cellulitis or localized edema.
I recommend, if you have slightly convinced that you have a bat bite then you should go for prophylactic immunoglobulin because hand is the most common site after bite which leads to rabies. Because it is not necessary to have fever first day. It can come after couple of days and if it is from the sting bite, it should be resolved with antihistamines and anti-inflammatory.
Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
