What causes severe pain and burning sensation in the big toe?

okay thank you. The issue that i am having is with my left big toe. I ve been diagnosed as a diabetic. Recently have been having a pain on my big toe. So much so that i could hardly sleep. It feel like a burning sensation more than anything. I did go to a podiatrist for what seem to be a toenail fungus and that toe nail was supposed to shed the one underneath but it hasn t yet and it s been months. What could cause this horrible pain?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

In diabetic patients toe pain may be due to:

1. Early stage of cellulitis
2. In grown toe nail
3. Fungal infection
4. Diabetic neuropathy pain

Until examination is done it is difficult to say what it is.
Use tablet Pregabalin once daily for five days.

If symptoms not improved please consult your doctor he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query.

My large toe is in horrible pain..nothing really hurts where the nail and the skin meet on the left side of the toe. I do have fungal toe nails..all of them..all of my life..the other night the toe bled when I rubbed some Voltaren Gel on it..the toe is extremely painful at night time, especially..and I do not know why. It has been this way for months now.

I was wandering if you could give me an idea as to what is wrong with my toe. I am a fitness instructor and teach a lot of high impact classes which includes kicking jumping and running etc. Today my big toe on my right foot has been causing me a lot of pain. I haven t banged it or done anything to my foot which I can say that s why my toe hurts. I can t go on my tip toes or lunge as this is very painful and it hurts when I walk. I don t feel any pain when I m just sat down and there is no swelling or bruising. Do you have any idea what is wrong with it? And how to make it go away quickly? Thanks
