What Causes Severe Headache With Swollen Eyelids?

My 18 year old daughter had whiplash from a river rafting trip when a paddle shot off a rock wall and hit her in the chest knocking her back. She has since had a severe headache. I had her sleep all day today in case she has a concussion with it. She woke up with red eyes and swollen eye lids. The initial injury was 9 days ago. Is there something else going on?

Hi,

Noted the history about your 18 year old daughter about whiplash injury during rafting, she has red eyes and swollen eyelids, severe headache.
Such findings indicate the necessity to go to ER as she needs urgent clinical evaluation, examination, MRI of brain and spine.
The probable causes can be related to injury to frontal area of scalp and brain, there can be counter coup injury to the front part of brain and coverings.
This can cause the findings as you have noted and may need urgent surgical actions.
Do not waste time at home as the golden period for management can pass off and complications would arise.
