What Causes Severe Hair Loss After Having Insulin?

I have been on insulin for a while and it seems like since I have been on it my hair has been steadily falling out. It also seems to get worse when I take more insulin. Is this a side effect to the insulin? I am on Humalin R. will changing from regular to Novalog help?

Hi,
Thanks for writing in HCM.
Insulin preparations are taken to bring down blood glucose levels to normal.
Side effects of Humalin R include: hypoglycemic symptoms like sweating, hunger, blurred vision, dizziness; and serious allergic reaction like rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), trouble breathing.
Hair loss is not a side effect observed with the administration of this drug.
Hence, before you conclude that it is due to Humalin R and switching over to Novalong, you need to take medical advise from a Physician or Diabetologist. Also, your hair loss problem can be evaluated by Dermatologist.
All the best.
