What Causes Severe Abdominal Cramps Inspite Of Taking Aciphex?

Several years ago, I had a severe problem. I would be eating maybe just one helping of food, and suddenly at the end of my esophagus and the beginning of my stomach, my stomach would begin to cramp. Sometines this cramp would go on for hours, and finally I would have to go to the emergency room to have the pain taken cre of. I woukd be given a medication that would relieve the cramping. It was very painful, could not swallow normally when the stomach was cramping. I am now having some of the same symptioms. I believe the medication given to me then was acephex and that would relieve the symptoms in about five minutes. Could you give me info regarding this.dkbelle

Hello,

Since you have a history of having pain abdomen after taking few bites of food and you are experiencing similar symptoms at present you are suggested to take food in time. Do not stay empty stomach for a long period of time or ignore taking food when you are feeling hungry. It cause acid secretions that may cause the mucosal lining of the stomach or the esophagus to corrode and even cause ulcer. Avoid taking spicy or oily food for a couple of days.

Take boiled food that is well cooked, do not take food that is difficult to digest like red meat or full fat dairy products. Take food that is easily digestible. Take oats, khichri, porridge, custard, etc. Sleep in time, do not over strain yourself. Take boiled water always. For relief, you can take PPIs, like Rabeprazole or Pantoprazole, one SOS when needed. Antacids also are effective. You are suggested to clinically get examined by a GP, get routine tests done. Get treated at the earliest.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
