What Causes Severe Abdominal Bloating And Constipation Post A Colonoscopy?

I have been dealing with severe constipation for the past nearly two years, along with painful bloating that sometimes gets so bad that I look 6 months pregnant. I m a 22 year old female and it s getting to the point where I don t know what else to do. I take over the counter stool softeners, which seem to work to a degree, and have even eliminated certain foods from my diet. The bloating is still there though. I have had a colonoscopy, Sitz Marker study, etc. Nobody can find out what is going on. Everything came back relatively normal, along with ultrasounds and MRI.

Hi

I don't think there is any serious issue. Your colonoscopy is normal. Your symptoms seem to be due to chronic constipation with altered microflora. You need further evaluation.
Thyroid function test, stool analysis and MR defecography.

Meanwhile, I suggest you to take high fiber diet, plenty of fluids, avoid spicy meals and avoid taking food in hurry as it aggravates the bloating due to swallowing of gas along with food. I would also suggest probiotics.

Hope you got some basic information.

Dr Zahoor
