What Causes Sensing Unusual Smell While Experiencing Low Heart Rate?

My husband keeps smelling and tasting an acetone type smell, especially when he coughs or sneezes. Please could you tell me what this could mean. he is five foot nine inches, weighs about eleven and a half stone and is 63 years old. He has never had any serious illness before but when he had his annual health MOT he was put on a heart rate monitor for twenty four hours and also had an ECG test as his heart rate was considered to be rather slow - 47 beats per minute. I hope the information I have given may help you reach a conclusion as to the possible cause of the acetone smell and maybe you could advise if any action should be taken. many Thanks

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Please check for diabetes. Acetone smell can be caused by a condition called diabetic keto acidosis. Please check his fasting blood glucose and post prandial glucose. Consult a GP immediately.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Prasanna Lakshmi, Pediatrician
