What Causes Seeing Smoke Like Mist After Waking Up?

I had an incident about a month ago where I woke up from sleeping on my couch. I got up to go to the bathroom and my whole house was covered in smoke and I thought my house was on fire! The smoke was covering my whole house, and it was really weird. I went to the bathroom and kept blinking my eyes to make sure I was not imagining it. The smoke was still there. I went to the sink and rinsed out my eyes to make sure I wasn t imagining it and FINALLY the smoke went away. I just saw a neuro opthamologist yesterday and had a test. She said my eyes look fine but she thought it was my imagination and it was like I was sleep walking. I do have cataracts but they are not severe yet so maybe the cataracts are the culprit. Anyway, the smoke covered house was very real and weird! I felt I did not get a good answer for sure why this happened, but I m thinking it might be the cataracts but this episode has NOT happened again so can t imagine why it only happened once. Any suggestions? THANKS SO MUCH!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It is possible that the smoke-like mist you experienced was a visual hallucination, which can be caused by a variety of factors including sleep deprivation, stress, certain medications, and underlying medical conditions such as migraines or epilepsy. It is also possible that it could be related to your cataracts, but it would be best to discuss this possibility with your ophthalmologist or a neurologist. If you experience this again or have any other concerning symptoms, it is important to seek medical attention.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
