What Causes Recurring Pain In Center Of Chest While Being Stressed?

About three times a year, I have a pain in the center of my chest that lasts for maybe 10-15 minutes. No shortness of breath. It seems to happen after I ve been stressed. I am otherwise healthy. Normal BP, pulse (although somewhat irregular when these episodes occur). I run, maintain a normal weight and have a healthy lipid level, and eat mostly vegetarian. I take no RX meds and currently do not have a family doc. What do you recommend?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You are suffering from recurring pain in the center of the chest. You experience it after you are stressed. It is indicative of stomach problems, such as ulcers. Psychological problems, including pain disorders, stress, anxiety and depression. It can also be due to bone or muscles problem in the chest, chest wall, etc. You have not mentioned about any chronic lung disease.

You can get blood tests, upper endoscopy or ultrasound done, esophageal motility test, etc., done to detect the pathology causing you symptoms. Your treatment will depend on the diagnosis made. Quit smoking, stay away from anxiety, maintain healthy weight and avoid taking NSAIDs as they may trigger your symptoms and cause discomfort.

You are suggested to take PPIs, one stat when needed for relieve from discomfort and pain. Avoid taking oily, spicy, junk food. Avoid taking food that causes acidity / gastritis. Acid reflux also causes the symptoms that you are experiencing. Get clinically evaluated. you may also need emotional and behavioral therapies. Stay away from addictions if any.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
