What Causes Recurring Itchy Welts?

I am 55 years old and have not gone through menapause yet. At least I still have regular periods. The last couple of months I have experienced hives. Mostly late afternoon and evenings, but some during the day as well. I get large red welts that itch and get worse upon scratching. Benedryl helps, but makes me drowsy. Is this related to the onset of menapause? is there anything I can do to help with the hives. My email is YYYY@YYYY

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The symptoms can be related to an allergic reaction. I don't think that the symptoms are related to menopause. I recommend to do an allergic test for further evaluation. Meanwhile, I suggest using an antihistamine such as Benadryl to relieve the symptoms.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
