What Causes Recurrent Seizures?

My daughter had a seizure 14 months ago. That was the first one. Every type of test was done, but they could not find a cause and said if she did not have another one in 6 months, she probably would never have one again. She had one a few days ago. Should she be examined again or should we wait. She was 16 with the first one and she will be 18 in May. Will she continue to have them?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Yes, she needs to be examined again. Gets a second opinion, more detailed imaging studies required.

Observe for any trigger factors (stress, lack of proper sleep, illness, cold, extreme temperatures, loud noises or flashing lights, caffeine or other food items, fever). Seizures happen for a reason. It is better to keep looking for the cause.

I recommend you:
- Neurologist opinion, a second opinion
- MRI of the brain and its blood vessels
- Electrocardiogram to check for heart arrhythmias

Further tests based on clinical examination. She needs to examined and diagnosed as soon as possible.

Recurrent seizures affect brain cells and can make like very unpredictable and dependant. Finding the cause can help with treatment and possibly cure so that she can go on to live a normal life.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shuba Hariprasad
