What Causes Random Stabbing Pain In Arm Post Blood Donation?

I have been giving blood for 6 years now, but 3 years ago after a certain donation process my arm developed a random stabbing pain (as if a needle is being inserted) specifically at the donation site. It will happen, last maybe a second, and then go away, sometimes multiple times a day and other times as infrequently as once a week. Nothing seems to aggravate onset of pain, nor to prevent it. I ve continued to give blood because I figured why not, with the stabbing pain happening anyway. I am in good health and have no history of injuring my arm. This is specific to my right arm, though I have donated via my left arm as well (no resulting chronic pain). What is it and how can I resolve it? It s irritating but I can live with it just fine. Just wondering what it may be.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It seems you had a puncture of blood vessel causing hematoma. Which got healed on its own over the time but few supplying nerve fibers have been entangled in the scar /injured a nerve fiber forming small swelling over nerve (nuroma).

Both of these conditions can cause your symptoms OR periferal nuritis due to condition like long standing diabetes is another possibility./some cervical spine problems causing pressure on the specific nerve problems OR remote possibility of cervical rib causing pressure on nerve at neck leveldue to change of posture due to age are other possible factors.

All of these need to be screwtinized & confirmed with help of an orthopedic surgeon/neurophysician. Few investigations like MRI may be asked to be done. Followed by needful specific management.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
