What Causes Purple Discoloration On The Fingers And Toes?

Hi! I was diagnosed with SLE Lupus in 1987 & have the pkg deal, including Raynauds Phenom. This Winter has been a bit colder than normal in Texas. My fingers turn purple on the tips & my toes also. I have Osteo-Necrosis in both Knees; (dead bone in the center of both knees). My question today is : Does the Raynauds make both my knees turn purple, only surrounding my kneecaps, but NOT the back of my knees ? Thank you for your time, Noni

Pulmonologist 's  Response
HI,

SLE is systemic lupus erythematosus.

It is vaculitis of autoimmune disease.

It affects small vessels and cause inflammation and spasm Of vessels.

These will cause reduced blood supply, especially in fingers and toes.

Ultimately it will reflect as pain and bluish purple discoloration of fingers.

So, you might be having SLE crisis and hence you should definitely consult your doctor for this.

You will need Intravenous steroids and other immunosuppressive drugs.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Kaushal Bhavsar,
