What Causes Prolonged Periods?

My concern is that my period has been off since the 1st of the yr2012. Before Jan1 i always started around the 6th or somewhere close to it. Now ive been bleeding ever 14 to 20 days. Ive took pregnacy test, not pregnant. O.K. Now this month i started on the 3rd & im still bleeding. Ive always stayed on my period for 7 days.
