What Causes Prolonged Period Bleeding?

I have been having my period for 2 months now, with 1 or 2 days off every few weeks. I am having quite severe cramps and some clots are almost tennis ball size. What might be wrong with me? I haven t had these problems before. Also, I am 39 years old, could this be a sign of early menopause?
