What Causes Pitting Edema In Ankle In Case Of Mitral Valve Prolapse?
Hi, I am a 53 year old women who has been in good health (did a triathlon this summer). I have been treated for plantar fasciitis recently but have no other health issues other than I have elevated cholesterol levels and a mitral valve prolapse. I have suddenly developed very mild pitting edema in my left ankle. Of course, I have been on vacation, eating rather poorly, and have been sitting around too much. Is this a concern that I need to go to the doctor about? of just a wait and see kind of thing?

Hi. As u have said, u have good functional capacity and you have very mild pitting edema. So u are a case of asymptomatic MVP. Most of the time asymptomatic MVP has benign prognosis. You should undergo initial echocardiography for risk stratification. If no clinically significant mitral regurgitation and thin leaflets are observed, clinical examinations and echocardiographic studies can be scheduled every 3-5 years. You can pursue a normal, unrestricted lifestyle. You can consult cardiologist for echo and treatment of dyslipidemia. Take care.
