What Causes Pins And Needles Sensation In The Fingers?

I go on a early rafting trip every year in the back country of Idaho. The water is extremely cold and its a four day trip. My hands always get cold. As in frost bit. It seems that every year they get worse. Although my hands feel warm days later the finger tips still feel like pins and needles when I touch them. Then the skin falls off the tips and I bleed through the tips. After a couple weeks it all go away. Abpout twenty years ago I got so frost bitten that most of my fingers turned black. I am guessing that I have caused nerve damage and there is nothing I can do about this condition. My question: will it get worse over time and is there anything that might help?
