What Causes Persistent Sore Throat Along With Numb Swollen Face?

I ve been suffering for a while with various pains and a sore throat and have been to several doctors. I ended up getting hives Sunday and then Monday went to docs and he put me on a steroid pack and I started taking Benadryl. That day my face had swollen and was numb around my mouth and nose. Then last night it got worse, the steroids and Benadryl did not seem to be helping so I went to ER. I found out that I have mono with acute tonsillitis. They gave me a Benadryl injection with Pepcid and an IV. Started to feel a little funny and tingly but doc said it can be normal to feel that way with injection. Today, I have numbness it seems everywhere! My tongue, my arms, feet, legs. My face seems swollen still but my fingers and toes are swollen now. I m concerned and I was wondering if this is normal? My hives have went down and very little itching but I just feel very numb everywhere.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

The spread of infection to the facial tissues and all around causes edema which in turn stretches the nerves and the different sensation one gets. Temporary neuronitis is another possibility. Hence, I would advise you to consult an ENT surgeon for clinical evaluation, with examination and detailed investigations like blood CBC, kidney and liver function, blood culture and sensitivity and as required. MRI of the face and neck is to find out the spread of edema, any collection, has need of incision and drainage. Thus, go for it if present. You will need broad spectrum antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medicines.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
