What Causes Persistent Painful Headaches?

For the past 2 days i have been getting these very painful headaches. Its a throbbing feeling only on the left side of my head. It comes and goes every couple of hours and makes it difficult to look at my phone, TV, and at times i can barely stay still to rest. Should I make an appointment with my doctor or go to the emergency room right?
