What Causes Persistent Pain In Upper Abdomen?

Persistent sharp pain in upper abdomen, behind ribs. Have been to ER twice in last three months - once I was told it was pancreatitis and the second time that it was a kidney infection caused by UTI. not a heart problem according to doctors. Had gall bladder removed last month. Pain subsides occasionally but returns with a vengeance. Almost finished with antibiotics for UTI and no sign pain is getting any better. Any ideas?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

If there is no clear cause for the pain then you may want to consider having imaging of the abdomen to find out the cause.

This can be by ultrasound or CT scan of the abdomen.

Pain in the upper abdomen can be related to any of the structures in this area- the liver on right, the spleen on the right, the stomach and part of the intestines and pancreas.

I hope this helps
