What Causes Persistent Pain In The Right Shoulder?

Hello doctor. My right shoulder has a nagging pain that is persistent but usually only in the evenings after work. The pain is a constant dull pain, hard to describe, not positional, I can t move my arm anywhere to relieve the discomfort. On a 1 - 10 scale I would say a 7 or 8. About 16 years ago I hyperextended my right arm carrying a large, heavy, awkward object - my arm extended backward. The pain does not keep me from sleeping or from working the next day. I don t notice the pain in the morning or too much during the day. Pain relievers DO NOT make the pain stop, medications like hydrocodone 5/325 do nothing to relieve the pain. I am a 61-year-old male.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I have just gone through your query, the pain you described above looks like a ligament tear or a minor subluxation. This will restrict the range of motion and cause intense pain. Pain killers will only help you to numb the pain for time being by decreasing pain signals. In the long run, it is not going to do any help.
1) Give adequate rest.
2) Use hot/cold fomentation.
3) Schedule an appointment with an orthopaedic Doctor to get an X-ray done to evaluate further.
4) You may need physiotherapy too for further management.
5) Meanwhile, along with rest and hot fomentation, use a topical analgesic spray to numb it.

However, since its such a long duration, better to get evaluated by an orthopedic surgeon at the earliest.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Moses John Wesley,
General & Family Physician
