What Causes Persistent Pain In The Chest When Diagnosed With Basal Pneumonia?

Hi, my husband was diagnosed with basal pneumonia 6 days ago & was admitted to hospital for 1 night to have an intravenous drip. He was then sent home with Doxycyclone 100mg twice a day for 5 days. He finished the course yesterday but our GP has now prescribed Clarithromycin 500mg twice a day for 7 days because he s still having pains coming & going. He doesnt have the pain when he breathe s in or coughs. Please can you tell me how long he will experience these pains? Many thanks

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Pneumonia can cause chest pain. Lung conditions or diseases, including diseases of the pleura, the tissue that covers the lungs may cause chest pain as a symptom.

Pleuritis. Also known as pleurisy, this condition is an inflammation or irritation of the lining of the lungs and chest and causes pain like a sharp pain. The most common causes of pleuritic chest pain are bacterial or viral infections.

Your doctor may look for swelling or fluid with an X-ray, ultrasound, or CT scan. She might also give you an electrocardiogram (EKG) to make sure that a heart problem isn't the cause of your chest pain.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Enton Dore, General & Family Physician
