What Causes Persistent Pain In Ear Despite Using Otomize Spray?

hi, for the past 4-5 days I have been in a lot of pain due to a horrible ear infection. on sunday morning I had an emergency appointment with a doctor who confirmed I had a bad ear infection and prescribed me otomize ear spray. After two days using the spray three times a day as directed, my ear is still very tender and I am still in pain. also I have a swollen gland just to the side of my earlobe on the top of my jaw which isn t going down at all. It is still painful and therefore difficult to eat or chew anything. could you please tell me how long it should take for my symptoms to dissappear by using otomize ear spray? Also, on the information leaflet provided with the spray, it says that you shouldn t use otomize if you have a grommit in your ear. The thing is, a few years ago I had a grommit fitted in my infected ear and I m not sure if it has come out yet. Therefore, if the grommet is still in my ear, how harmful is it for me to continue using the spray? I look forward to hearing back from you. Many thanks. Steve Kings

Hi,

Persistent ear pain despite using Otomize spray could be caused by a few different factors. It is possible that the ear infection is severe or has spread beyond the middle ear, and may require additional or different treatment than the Otomize spray. In some cases, the infection may also be resistant to the antibiotic or antifungal medication in the spray.

It is also possible that the swelling and pain in the gland near the ear is related to the ear infection or a separate condition, such as an abscess or inflammation.

Regarding the use of Otomize spray with a grommet, it is generally not recommended to use the spray if a grommet is still in place. This is because the spray can enter the middle ear through the grommet, potentially causing damage or irritation. If there is uncertainty about whether the grommet is still in place, it is important to consult with a healthcare provider before using the spray.

As for the expected duration of symptoms with Otomize spray, this can vary depending on the severity and type of infection. Some people may start to feel relief within a few days, while others may require longer treatment or additional medication. It is important to follow the instructions provided by the prescribing healthcare provider and to seek follow-up care if symptoms do not improve or worsen.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
