What Causes Persistent Cough And Pain At Back Of Tongue?

I have been coughing for two weeks (although it is much better) but now the back of my tongue hurts when I swallow, as well as under my tongue. Also hurts when I move it about. No fever. No change in texture or color. No lesions that I'm aware of and it doesn't feel swollen. I feel it mostly on the left side and my left ear seems to hurt when I swallow as well. No other symptoms but I had a slight runny nose at some point. Should I see a doctor?

Hi Dear ,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern.

Thanks for your query . The symptoms you mention inquery are pointing towards a condition known as acidic reflux or garstroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

In this condition the upper sphincter of esophagus allow the acid content of stomach to come back into esophagus which causes problem . Cough and pain at the back of the tongue are the result of GERD .

I would suggest you to change your eating habits and life style like avoid heavy and spicy food at night , take very light meal , sleep with your head little bit elevated at night , take meal atleast one hour before sleep and take a 15 min walk after meal. Do warm saline rinses for pain and cough.

If condition still persist then consult gastroenterology for proper treatment and to rule out the condition like infection in upper respiratory track .Doctor may order blood test or test to check amount of acid. Doctor may prescrivbe antacid (gelusil) to neutralize acid , H2 blocker like rinitidine to reduce acid prodction or ameprazole .

Hope your concern has been resolved.
