What Causes Persistent Brown Vaginal Spotting?

I am bleeding for 4 weeks straight. At first it started off as brown spotting, then gradually I started to bleed like a period. Thinking it was my period I didn t really think much of it, but the bleeding kept coming and going until 3 weeks in I bled so heavy I filled a pad in an hour. I had many many blood clots as well. I went to the doctors and they suggested birth control which I do not want to take, so they gave me a 7 day medicine called tranexamic acid. I took it for 7 days following instructions to the T. It s been 3 days since I finished the 7 day medicine, but I am still bleeding. It did go down a bit, I am not bleeding as heavy as before, but I am still bleeding. I am 24 yrs old, 160 pounds, 5 3 and I am married so sexually active

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It would be best to have an ultrasound done to take a look at the genital tract (uterus, ovaries, tubes) to see if there is a structural cause that can be found, that is fibroids, endometriosis, polyps (non cancerous growths). Blood tests for hormone levels may also need to be done as well depending on the clinical findings when you are examined by your gynecologist. Any further treatment would depend on the results of the investigations done.

I hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
