Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Palpitations After Lowering Metoprolol Dosage?
Following recent cardiac stress test, my cardiologist felt my metoprol could be cut. I was taking 25mg twice daily. For the last three days I have been taking 12 mg twice daily. As I lay down to sleep I feel my heartbeat stronger in my chest. My pulse is not much faster than before. Just the awareness of the heartbeat is different. I assume this may be my body adjusting? Thanks.
This does not sound like it would be concerning, as long as your heart rate and blood pressure is within normal limits, most likely there is no problem. It may just be with the stress test, and the change in medication, you are paying more attention to your heart (especially at night, when you have nothing else to think about) and so you are more aware of your heart beating. But over time this should pass.
Another thing to think about, though I doubt this to be the case, is if you have started having an abnormal heart rhythm, such as atrial fibrillation. Next time you see your doctor they might check an EKG to make sure your rhythm is fine, especially if this sensation does not go away.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Aaron Branch,
