What Causes Painful Urination After Hernia Repair Surgery?

Hi, when i urinate there is a burning sensation. I am also urinating very frequently, starts out strong and then quickly becomes not strong. I am 34, and just had a right inguinal hernia repair 4 weeks ago. I got a home test for UTI, but that was negative. any thoughts?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

* As per my surgical experience, the painful urination after hernia surgery may be indicative of

- post-spinal anesthesia sequence

- if history of catheter insertion during or after surgery, a urethral narrowing or stricture

- cystitis without urinary infection

- prostate edema or inflammation

- concern with certain antibiotics or anti-inflammatory medications if currently being consumed.

A complete and thorough physical examination, ultrasound of the abdomen and pelvis, prostate with post void residual urine volume will be of immense help to conclude the cause and care accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
