What Causes Painful Menstruation After Using Tampons?

I have a tilted uterus. As soon as I started using tampons three years ago, my period which lasted 6-7 days went to 2-3 days. I am in my 40 s and my periods were always painful and very long. Up to 8 days in some cases with very light flow. As in some days hardly any flow during the week long periods. When I say painful, I mean painful to the point that I feel physical heat from my vagina, throbbing and feel that the flow is struggling to expel. I have tried several times to test my theory that perhaps the way my uterus is tilted, that tampons help with my flow. I stopped using tampons on several occasions to test the theory in the three years since I started using them. The periods go back to 6-7 days with very light sporadic flow. I have asked my doctor and she says she doesn t believe it has anything to do with tampons. I shared that when I have on 6 occasions not used tampons what happened and what happened when I used them again. Is there any validity to my hypothesis that tampons can help flow for those with a tilted uterus?

Hello,

As you are aware of the fact that menstruation gets affected by many factors especially hormones and medicines and with age, as a lady grows older towards the age of menopause there are changes seen which can be in the form of the intensity of pain as well as other symptoms like hot flashes, stress etc. It's good that you talked to your doctor about your doubts and I agree with what your doctor has said, it's less likely related to the use of tampons.

I would suggest you get an ultrasound abdomen done as per your gynecologist's advice for the complaints of pain and prolonged duration of menstruation. She might advise you additional diagnostic tests to get done. After seeing the results and medical history she will be able to guide you further with appropriate management.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Manisha Auradkar, General & Family Physician
