What Causes Pain, Redness And Swelling After Hitting The Leg?

Three weeks ago I hit my leg on a cup holder getting out of a car. I didn t think anything of it until I had a giant dark purple bruise there in the morning. The bruise went away about four days ago, and everything was completely normal. Two days ago I noticed the area was turning red and felt firm, like when you get a bump on your head. Now, the area is red and swollen. It s also warmer than the rest of my leg. I tried an ice pack and ibuprofen, neither brought down the swelling. It s on my left leg just below my knee, slightly to the left side of my leg. The swollen area is about four inches tall and three inches wide. Do you think this is abnormal? What should I do about it? It hurts pretty much all the time with a dull bruise-like pain, even when I m not touching it.

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,Thanks for your query. After going through your query I came to know that you got injury to your leg and you got hematoma. If you has no fever, then no need to worry much. Hematoma gradually resolved by itself .Thrombophob gel local application three times a day over it(no rubbing) can help in resolving it. Sometimes haematoma does not resolve by themselves. In these cases aspiration with wide bore needle is done to suck the collected blood under aseptic condition for which you need to visit doctor. You can discuss with your treating Doctor about it.I do hope that you have found something helpful. If you have additional questions or follow up queries then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your queries.
