What Causes Pain Inside Left Knee On Walking, Squatting And Sitting?

i have pain on the inside of my left knee and unable to sleep. The pain increases when I climb down stairs, walk, squat, or sit for a long time. I have used pain killers to contain inflammation and the effectiveness of relief is reducing. However, there is no visible redness or swelling of the knee. I am taking Combiflam currently (one pill per day). Resting of the knee usually alleviates the pain. I had referred to Ortho Doctors and had two MRI and X-ray in the Knee area and in the hip area and he has cleared that every thing is good. The MRI of the knee joint revealed a small peripheral tear in the posterior horn of medial meniscus. But the doctor says that is not an issue and the tear would heal on its own. He suggested quadricep strengthening exercises initially. I was doing the exercises for 2 weeks but noticed an increase in the pain. I went back to him but he is unable to arrive at a conclusion on the exact cause for the pain. He has suggested to use Disprin twice a day for 10 days and to stop medicines for 20 days and then refer to him for observation. I am aged 21 and I have this condition for the past six months. I work as a software developer so I sit in front of the computer for atleast 6 hours everyday.

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for your query.

Considering your age, previous medical history and your present complaints, you might be suffering from arthritis of patella. In early stages it presents as painful initiation of movement of knee and later on subsides during routine work. This condition is called as Chondromalacia patellae. But it is too early to say that you are suffering from this condition, without a proper clinical examination by an orthopaedician. Visit your doctor, get yourself examined. Your doctor will advice you to go for a xray.
Generally physiotherapy for your quadriceps muscle with straight leg raising and knee mobilisation will improve your muscle strength and will decrease the progression of arthritis. Life style modifications like avoiding stairs, squatting, sitting cross legged & cycling will also help in reducing your symptoms. Reducing weight is of prime importance if you are overweight. If the pain is severe, you can take few doses of NSAID's or physiotherapic modalities like IFT to relieve your pain.

I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query.
Take care
