What Causes Pain In Throat While Swallowing?

hi! i went to the doctor last saturday and had a strep test done. it came back positive and the doctor gave me 10 days, twice a day antibiotic. it seemed to be helping. no more fever, appetite is back and white spots are gone. i still had very mild discomfort swallowing. Now, 6 days after my first day on antibiotics i have an awful pain when swallowing. the pain is only on my left side tonsil and it shoots up to my jaw and ear. im going to continue my 10 day prescription but was wondering if i should go back to the doctor and have my throat looked at again. will the pain subside?

Hello,

Thank you for asking at HCM.

There are several cause of sore throat. If you had antibiotics and had improvement and now the pain is back while you are still on antibiotics and the pain is much severe you need to make sure you do not have a complication of tonsillitis.
Rarely it happens but you might need to see a doctor to check if you have developed peritonsillar abscess which is puss collected at the area of the tonsil. If there is no peritonsillar abscess than the other option might be just blockage of the eustakian tube which connects the throat with the ear and might give pain in the side of the throat and close to the jaw and ear. This is not dangerous and tends to go with time and just pain killers an time and it gets better. It does not generally cause severe pain.
I would recommend you to see the doctor and not wait for the 10 days cure to be completed if your pain is worse. If tonsillitis is complicated with peritonsillar abscess antibiotics alone do not help, thedoctor might need to make a small incision to drain the puss so it heals better and quicker.
I hope this answers to your questions and is helpful to you.

Best regards,
I find this answer helpful
