What Causes Pain In The Right Leg Radiating Towards Buttocks And Calf Area?

My 76 Yrs old mother have been having muscle aching pain on the SIDE of her right leg from buttocks and also from below knee to calf area at the same time for the last 3 to 4 weeks. The pain is now unbarable for the past week to where she can not stand or walk long. Sometimes every 5 min. She has to sit or lay down due to the pain . She haven t fallen or did anything of stringent work on the lower torso. Should i take her to a general practitioner or a specialist, if so which specialist? What are the possible diagnoses?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The symptoms are typical of sciatica.

As first-line management, you can take analgesics like gabapentin for pain relief. If symptoms persist better to consult an orthopaedic and plan for an MRI scan.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
