Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
LAST FALL MY FAMILY DOCTOR DIAGNOSED MY CONDITION AS ILIO TIBIAL BAND SYNDROME AND GAVE ME A BATTERY OF EXERCISES TO TRY, AND THEY HELPED. MY PAIN IS IN THE RIGHT HIP AND WHEN I DO THE EXERCISES I CAN FEEL THE BAND FROM THE HIP DOWN THE OUTSIDE OF THE THIGH. WE ARE WALKERS (USED TO RUN) AND WALK A 2 MILE 2 OR THREE TIMES A WEEK. LAST MONDAY WE WALKED AND i WOKE UP TUESDAY WITH PAIN IN THE HIP. MADE IT THROUGH THE DAY AND TRIED TO WALK TUESDAY EVENING AND COULD NOT. TRIED AGAIN WEDNESDAY AND COULD NOT WALK WITHOUT PAIN. HAVE RESTED SINCE THEN AND HAVE RESORTED TO SLEEPING IN A RECLINER TO GET COMFORTABLE. I HAVE READ THAT REST, ICE, AND ANTI-INFLAMATORIES ARE INDICATED. REST HELPS BUT THIS SEEMS LIKE A LONG TERM PROPOSITION. THE READING SEEMS THAT ITBS IS MOST COMMON AT THE KNEE, IS IT ALSO A HIP THING OR IS SOMETHING ELSE AT PLAY HERE?
It could be due to neuropathic causes like sciatica or due to musculoskeletal pain. As a first line management you can take analgesics like Gabapentin for pain relief. If symptoms persist, better to consult an orthopaedician and plan for an MRI scan.
Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
