What Causes Pain In Jaw Radiating To Ear Post Placement Of Temporary Crown?

I had a temporary crown put on, next to last tooth bottom left side and am feeling pain from left jaw, chin to ear, especially painful when I open my mouth while eating. The dentist also injected me three times within seconds of each injection, telling me the first two injections went into arteries. The pain at one point subsided but now continues worse than it was when I was at the dentist two weeks ago. What is the cause of my pain?

Hi Dear,
Welcome to HCM.
Understanding your concern.

Thanks for your query . The symptoms you mention in query is clearly indicating ill fitted crown . The ill fitted crown create misalignment and high point which leads ti incorrect bite . This incorrect bite is real cause for pain in jaw . Due to high point stress is generated on temporomandibular joint and muscles of mastication. That is why pain occur on opening mouth or eating.

I would suggest you to immediately call the dentist and fix the appointment for proper examination of the condition.Doctor will examine it physically or order x-ray to find the exact problem and rule out condition like fractured tooth or infection under the crown .

Dentist may adjust the high point by grinding the cusp of crown and prescribe you muscle relaxant . Dentist will prescribe antibiotics for infection.

For now give warm compresses to affected side , do physical therapy , avoid hard food and forceful bite . take advil (if not allergic) or tylenol for pain.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
