Hello,

The following conditions are few probable causes of your husband's pain in his back and arm:
1) Cervical spondylitis
2) Traumatic brachial plexopathy
3) Rheumatoid arthritis
4) Osteoarthritis
5) Adhesive capsulitis of shoulder

Treatment depends upon the cause of disease. But the basic principles of treatment are the same as follows:
1) Pain relieving medication like NSAIDs ibuprofen or Naproxen is to be taken twice daily for 14 days.
2) To prevent gastric irritation, tab. Pantop 40 mg to be taken once daily before food.
3) People who have bleeding disorders and kidney disease better avoid NSAIDs and can take opioids like hydrocodone, oxycodone and Tramadol.
4) Muscle relaxant like chlorzoxazone can be combined with pain medications.
5) Physical therapy to strengthen the muscles and reduce pain is indicated.

If his pain doesn't come down even after 14 days of above treatment, please do contact a neurosurgeon or orthopedic surgeon for further evaluation.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
