What Causes Pain In And Around Navel?

Hello. I have been walking for a number of years, but this summer I started having a pain at my belly button area. It has steadily gotten worse to the point I don t want to walk much. It sometimes lasts a while afterward and may hurt up into my chest. I have had a stress test and echo cardigan and all was fine. Any ideas.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Dr. Hanif warmly welcomes you with thanks for a consult!

I have carefully worked through your case, and can well realize your health worries. Being your physician, I want to assure, I will take care all of your medical concerns according to the latest medical guidelines.

There are three main possibilities for the pain in the region of the belly-button (the umbilical area):-

1. Umbilical or paraumbilical hernia (the intestinal contents inside the abdomen outpouch through the gap in the inner covering of the abdomen (the peritoneum).

2. The abdominal aorta dilates abnormally (aneurysm). It is also painful sometimes very cruciating, sometimes moderated localized pain.

3. Boil of hair follicle infection in the area also causes pain and in this case you need to see if there is boil visible to naked eye. Infection may also be caused to the inner area of the umbilicus as seen in persons who have a funnel opening of the umbilicus.

If it is infectio, you need a prescription for Augmentin + Ibuprofen and some hot fomentation. It will resolve the issue.

If it is not a boil then you need to consult a General Surgeon to rule out hernia. He may also rule out if this is due to inflammation of the intestines that may be due to many reasons including worm infestation.

If he says no hernia, you need a second opinion from a Vascular surgeon for abdominal aortic aneurysm possibility.
