What Causes Pain Behind The Knee And Calf After Taking Birth Control Pills?

I recently started birth control for the first time to help with unbalanced estrogen levels. I ve been on it 8 days. 2 days ago, I started having a dull ache behind my left knee/lower thigh area. Today (for the last 5-6 hours) I ve had a persistent left calf cramp/pain that s about a 7 out of 10 on the pain scale. Ibuprofen, a hot bath, and heat and ice compresses are not helping. My leg has no signs of swelling, warmth, or discoloration; just deep calf pain. Could this still be a blood clot? Should I go to the ER tonight?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Apart from the other side effects, birth control pills have the risk of causing DVT(Deep vein thrombosis) in some patients. Blood clots may develop in the calf muscles or the thighs.

If you are getting leg pain, redness, warmth, calf pain, swelling then you should visit ER, without delay. You need medical attention.

You need to be physically examined & assessed for any developing blood clot. You may have to go through some Imaging tests. Get treated at the earliest.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
