What Causes Pain And Weakness In The Wrist?

Hi. My left wrist has been hurting for a few weeks, it came on suddenly. It's the bone on the inside by my thumb. It also has made my wrist, thumb and forefinger weak, it hurts when I lift anything or when I turn my wrist, there hasn't been any swelling and I don't do anything repetitive with that hand.

Hi,
Thanks for your query.
As per your description it seems that you have a clinical condition called "carpel tunnel syndrome".It is a common problem especially among middle aged females. The pain and discomfort is due to compression of median nerve(one of the major nerve in your hand) at the wrist.
I see similar cases in my clinical practice. When a patient with similar symptoms comes to me,I would do some clinical examination to make a working diagnosis.(you can try this at home,Hold your hand in front of you and passively flex your wrist, letting your wrist hang down for 60 seconds,if you feel sharp pain or numbness you may have carpel tunnel).
If I were your treating physician I would do some investigations like TFT(thyroid Function Test),Lipid profile ,blood sugar to find out the primary causes of carpel tunnel.
As a first line treatment i would suggest physiotherapy and analgesics like diclofenac. You should also lose extra weight if you have any.If the symtoms persists I would refer to an orthopedician.
If you have experiencing severe pain that affect your daily activities I suggest you to consult an orthopedician for detailed evaluation. If medical management fails you may require steroid injection and in severe cases minor surgical procedures to correct the defect.
Hope this information helps.
Wishing you good health.

Regards.
