What Causes Pain And Swelling In The Testicles?

My 12-1/2 year old son is experiencing pain and a little swelling in one of his testicles. This happened one day last week as well. Last week the pain went away after a day, and has been fine ever since this evening. This time the pain came on in a matter of a couple hours.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Brief answer: Probably infection or hernia.

Detailed answer: There are a lot of reasons that causes swelling of the testicles.
First cause is infections like orchitis or epidimitis. In this case, it is necessary to do some laboratory tests to rule out or confirm the diagnosis of infections. If the lab results will be positive for infection, he should start treatment with antibiotics.

Another cause of swelling testicles is scrotal hernias. In this situation, it is recommended to do an ultrasound to check if there is any presence of hernia or not.

Another reason is testicular torsion, this is a severe condition, a surgical emergency, because the blood flow is blocked due to the torsion and may cause irreversible damages to testicular tissue. Also, varicoceles may cause swelling too. It is necessary to perform a colored ultrasound to check out these conditions.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Genti Mulla
