What Causes Pain And Swelling In Left Knee In A Person With Diabetes?

Hi! I have had pain/swelling/tenderness around left knee for 1 week+. Came on sudden-no history of trauma. Pain/swelling is increasing daily and noticeably. Pain increases with activity or movement. No apparent redness to area. Difficult to massage underside of knee due to pain. Do I need to be concerned about the possibility of a blood clot? I do have Type 2 diabetes that is controlled by diet. My treatment for pain has been 2 (325 mg) aspirin every 4 hours during the day. I am a 52 year old female. Thank you.

Hello,

Pain and slowly growing swelling of knee along with tenderness suggest some pathology. The following are most probable causes.
1) trauma
2) Infections like septic arthritis: fever is also seen
4) rheumatoid arthritis
5) Reactive arthritis: this is swelling of knee after a recent episode of urinary or respiratory infection
6) Acute prepatellar bursitis
7) Tumors

The following tests help in diagnosis:
1) CBP: complete blood picture
2) ESR
3) Urine examination
4) Aspiration of joint fluid to look for any leukocytes, microbes and crystals or blood
5) Ultrasound examination of affected knee
6) X-ray

I would recommend the following to those who come to my clinic with similar complaints:
1) Thorough history taking and clinical examination of knee
2) Few investigations as mentioned above
3) Depending upon the cause, treatment is suggested
4) In case of infective arthritis, antibiotics and analgesics especially NSAIDs like ibuprofen

In all those cases pain relieving medication is commonly given. I would recommend you to take Ibuprofen or Aceclofenac twice daily. Please consult an ortho doctor for detailed evaluation and appropriate treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
