What Causes Pain And Itching In The Vagina?

Hi. I ve had pain on my vagina, itchiness on my vagina, and a white discharge almost constantly since I was 13. I m 24 now. Whenever I talk to a doctor they say the vagina takes care of itself and it will go away soon, and I never really speak up and tell them how long this has been going on. It started before I ever had sex and over a year before I even started having periods. Just now is the second time I ve damaged the skin on my vulva scratching the itch. I m taking aspirin for the pain from the damage. I think it s vulvodynia. I m planning on calling a specialist tomorrow. I don t really have a question, I just would like to hear some kind words from a doctor. This is nuts.

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Pain and itching along with excessive discharge indicate that you are having a condition called as vulvo-vaginitis. There are so many reasons for vulvo-vaginitis including infection due to bacteria, fungus, virus and irritation due to applications, douche and allergy due to condoms and internal drugs and pre-malignant conditions.

As you had this problem even prior to your sexual activities, it would likely be due to fungal etiology (candidiasis). In women, it is quite common to get fungal vulvo-vaginitis from the gut (where it is a normal flora) because of the close approximation of anus to vaginal opening. Examination of genitals and investigations on the vaginal discharge will confirm or rule out the etiology of your problem. Treatment can be planned according to the outcome of the investigation report. Treatment has to be continued in adequate dose for adequate duration for the total eradication.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. S. Murugan
