What Causes Numbness In The Feet And Slurred Speech?

My daughter is in the hospital with numbness in her feet, blindness, tingling in her feet & hands. She has been in the hospital for 3 weeks & is still unable to walk & her speech is slurred. They say her autoimmune system has crashed & have her on IV drip & her legs are wrapped in what looks like air casts around her legs. She had been a heavy drinker & stopped drinking. It was about a week later that she had numbness in her feet then lost the use of her legs completely. We do not live close to each other & I am very concerned about her symptoms. My email address is YYYY@YYYY . Thank you very much for your time, Dr Rynne. We would appreciate any information as to what may have caused this to happen. She is being treated by a neurologist at this present time in a Huntsville Alabama hospital.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Numbness and tingling can be due to neuropathy which is abnormal function of the nerves. Blindness can be due to a number of different causes including neuropathy. Excess use of alcohol is one of the common causes of neuropathy, due to reduced ability of the body to use the vitamins. Alcohol itself has a toxic effect on many of the nerves in the body.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
