What Causes Numbness From The Lip To The Jaw On The Left Side?

Hello Dr. Rynne, I have something I think is weird! The left side of my lip down to my jaw is completely numb. Pain (not sharp) then runs up the left side of my jaw to my ear. I have been to my dentist, regular doctor, then a Neurologist & they seem to think it is Trigeminal Neuralgia. I am now on 1 Amitrip 50mg/2 times day and Carbamazepine ER /200mg/2xday. My numb 1/2 of lip is what is bothering me the most at the moment. I go for an MRI a week from Thursday and had an MRA last Saturday. Any thoughts of am I on the right path? Thank you so much! (P.S. I have Ketorolac Trometamine 10mg for pain but it does nothing!)

Thanks for your query.
Noted your history and understood your concerns.
Numbness in the left lip along with pain running up the left side of the jaw to left ear indicates a Neurological reason unless proved otherwise. You have already been on proper medication of Amitriptyline and Carbamazepine in proper dosages. With the result you may need change in dosages as per the clinical improvement.
But when a very limited local area is affected, it is better to watch for the exact cause. This is possible by Contrast enhanced CT and MRI of the mandible as there may be a hidden bone cyst like dentigerous cyst causing pressure on the nerve and thus causing the pains and numbness.
Sometimes change over to another medications like Gabapentin may be needed.
