What Causes No Periods After Taking Metformin 500mg?

Hello. I have taken almost an entire bottle of metformin 500mg at once a day for insulin resistance syndrome. I am as of now 6 days late for my period and took a home pregnancy test yesterday evening which was negative. I guess my question is, is it common to become late on ur first cycle since beginning the medicine? And how log should I wait to consult with my physician?

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Metformin is not known to cause a delay in period, so it is not likely due to the medication.

Insulin resistance itself can cause a period delay in some women so it is possible that the condition itself is causing the irregular period.

There are other causes such as : (1) high levels of a hormone called prolactin
(2)abnormal thyroid hormone levels
(3)emotional or physical stress or illness

You can wait for at least one more cycle to see if your period comes. If it does not then you should contact your doctor for investigations which would include physical examination, blood tests and imaging.

I hope this helps
