What Causes Muscular Spasms In Throat With History Of Barrett S Esophagus?

I am a male and I have Barretts Esophagus which I get an EGD on every other year and I just recently started having a fluttering or muscle spasam type feeling in that area. There is no pain at all, just the sensation that I feel and I m wondering what this is from and what is causing this. Could it be certain foods, stress, or something else? Had the last EGD last November in 2014 and all was okay. Thank you, Don Mack

Hi,

Muscle spasms in the throat can be caused by a variety of factors. Given your history of Barrett's esophagus, the spasms may be related to acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The muscle spasms may be a result of the acid irritating the esophagus and causing involuntary contractions of the muscles in the throat.

Other possible causes of muscle spasms in the throat include stress, anxiety, dehydration, and certain medications. Certain foods and beverages, such as caffeine, alcohol, and spicy or acidic foods, can also trigger spasms in some people.

It's important to discuss your symptoms with your healthcare provider. They may recommend further testing, such as an endoscopy, to evaluate the health of your esophagus and determine if any underlying conditions are contributing to your symptoms. In the meantime, avoiding trigger foods and beverages, practicing stress-reducing techniques, and staying hydrated may help alleviate your symptoms.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hi,

Muscular spasms in the throat can be caused by a variety of factors, including acid reflux, anxiety, stress, certain medications, or neurological conditions. In individuals with Barrett's esophagus, which is a condition where the lining of the esophagus changes due to chronic acid reflux, muscular spasms or fluttering sensations in the throat can be a symptom of the underlying condition.

It is possible that certain foods, stress, or other factors could be contributing to the muscular spasms you are experiencing. For example, some foods may exacerbate acid reflux symptoms, which could in turn contribute to muscular spasms in the throat. Stress and anxiety can also cause muscular tension and contribute to these types of symptoms.

However, it is also possible that the muscular spasms could be related to changes in the esophageal lining associated with Barrett's esophagus. To determine the underlying cause of your symptoms, it would be best to speak with your healthcare provider. They may recommend additional testing or evaluation to rule out other potential causes and determine the best course of treatment.

In the meantime, it may be helpful to keep track of your symptoms and any potential triggers, such as specific foods or stressful situations, to provide additional information to your healthcare provider. They can then use this information to help diagnose and manage your symptoms.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
