What Causes Muscle Spams In The Knee After Knee Replacement Surgery?

I had a right total knee repalcement Sept. 17 -for 4 months »i did the therapy »(exercises every day with a trained nurse in my home for one hour «ONE WEEK AFTER THE SURGERY i started having muscle spasms from my knee downward to my toes every two to three minutes - at night only- no pain with the spasms just jerking «««these spasms have increased starting at my hips down to my toes sometimes both sides left and right, sometimes only one side. my orthopedist surgeon says he has never encountered a patient like this before. my primary care physician recommended a muscle relaxant which did nothing except make me very tired the follwoing day right now my primary care physician has made an appointment with a neurologist as he is stumped- presently the only thing that lets me sleep at night is oxocodine which i try not to take too frequently. i had an epidural for the surgery, All blood tests regarding possible irregularities are normal. «I have taken quinine drinks for the spasms with no results. «i am 68 years old, very healthy otherwise, exercise regularly and maintain good nutrition. there is no pain or spasms whilst sitting or standing or walking - only at night after about an hour lying in bed. wish I could sleep standing up as then there are absolutely no spasms. thank you for your suggestions and comments e. prosser

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Dear Sir/Madam,
Thanks for seeking help on your issue; I have gone through your symptoms, and in my opinion, you seem to be over obsessed with your problem, try taking Vit E capsules 500mg daily for a period of 1 week and than stop. have plenty of water, continue with your exercises but do not overdo them, learn to relax, the more you anticipate and the more are the chances that they will occur. rest assured that your all investigations are normal, so you are normal and do not need any treatment for this condition. i hope with your will to cure yourself you will have magical effect.
I hope I have been able to provide you with a satisfactory solution, if you want to clear any doubts about my opinion, feel free to contact.
Special note- Any medication prescribed needs to be taken after consultation with your personal doctor only.
Thanks
