What Causes Muscle Cramps And Diarrhea In A Child?

Hi, my 8 year old daughter is experiencing waves of muscle cramping (painful) in her stomach and diarrhea. She started experiencing this on Tuesday and it continues to bother her with quite a bit of pain in her stomach. She does not have a fever and is not vomiting. We started giving her peptol bismol with bismuth subsalicylate yesterday. 250 mg three to four times per day. I am curious if this is an appropriate treatment for an 8 year old? And if her symptoms continue, should we see a doctor? Thank you for any info you can provide.

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

This suggests acute gastroenteritis. If no fever and stools are not blood stained, give her Paracetamol 3 times daily (for cramps) and give frequent sips of fluids like ORS to avoid dehydration.
If not getting better in 3 days, or if she develops fever, kindly take her to pediatrician as this might need antibiotics too.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
