If I have a drink (wine or alcohol) I recently started waking up with a migraine I think being caused by a stiff neck. I am a 50 year old woman and this has only occurred within the past month. My sleeping situation doesn t change from the nights I do not have a drink.
Any new headache needs medical evaluation. Cannot say in your particular situation, which, as you imply, is not a common situation. On neck pain, certainly a problem (arthritis, disk, etc.) at the very top of the spine can irritate the top nerve coming out of the spine which travels up the back of the head. This is very different pain from a migraine (which is all over or one sided all over, associated with all over symptoms like nausea and avoiding light, and lasts hours at least). Alcohol doesn't relate well to either. It can certainly trigger migraine but that wouldn't generally be in the morning unless hangover related (which overlaps in symptoms with migraine). Alcohol doesn't trigger pinched nerves.
