What Causes Lump On The Neck?

My 6 yr old grandson came to me with a small lump on the front right side (his left) of his neck. Its the size of a small marble. Its painful to the touch but not otherwise. It is more pronounced when he lifts his head, his throat doesn t hurt, no pain in swallowing, he hasn t been sick in quite awhile, no cuts or bites have been present. Seems to be eating normally for his age. His parents aren t aware of it yet so I have no idea how long its been there. What could it be in a child his age? Should we be worried?

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hello. Thank you for your question. This is very commonly seen in this age group. What you are describing is most likely a lymph node. It is normal. We all have them, but in some it is palpable, in others it is not. It is typically not anything to be concerned about. However, sometimes the node can become infected and require antibiotic. I suggest that if the pain worsens, you consult with your doctor. if it resolves on it's own in the next 24-48 hours, then we can ignore it.
