What Causes Lowering Of Blood Sugar Levels While On Lantus?

My dad is on 22 U of Lantus every morning he had been having issues with his blood sugar dropping below 60 at different times through the day and night (as a nurse I suggested snacks at bedtime ( it would drop at night ) now suddenly the past 3 days its dropped to the 50s around 5 pm this is with him having a healthy breakfast and lunch plus small snacks between meals. what causes it to drop to 50 at the same time around 5 pm daily??

In my opinion you are giving him higher dose of Lanctus than required. I would suggest you to decease the dose 2 units daily initially then 1 unit daily and measure the blood sugar level before and after every meal TILL THE DESIRED LEVEL IS reached that is 90 to 120 fasting and 120 to 150 postprandial . WARNING keep it on little higher side of normal value otherwise he may go in to hypoglycemia. If results are unsatisfactory see your doctor he may like to change the drug itself.
